The Nike Fuel bands are an amazing new product of the Nike Company. It is cool looking wristband that will track all your daily physical activities with an accelerometer. There are of more wrist bands in the market that measure your daily activities and count calories and measure your energy level. This device is the latest version of the earlier released bands with the latest technology added. Most of the earlier bands were made for sports people to keep track of their performance and training activities. The Nike Fuel bandstracks any activity and the display in the form of LED with different colors shows the total performance in the LEDs.

In February, Nike will begin offering theseFuelBand wristbands for $149 (they’re already sold out on pre-order), with the idea being that not just weekend warriors, but also anyone concerned about their health, can track their progress towards certain goals in real-time.

The genius of Nike’s new product launch is not just the ability to track data in real-time and convert this into a common, universal currency known as Fuel — one number, one button, via a simple, intuitive interface. The real genius is in combining all this fitness-tracking data with a fun game layer to motivate people to achieve their goals. The motivational element is activated via a mobile app that enables you to share achievements and accomplishments with friends. Thanks to a built-in accelerometer, every action you take – from climbing the stairs to running around a track – can be converted into a single number. Fuel becomes a currency for comparing your activity with others, whether they are playing tennis, running, hiking or (as the Nike promo video would have us know) dancing like MC Hammer.

In fact, the “motivational hack” angle is arguably one of the biggest selling points of Nike+ FuelBand. Who knew health could be this much fun? Without a doubt, the shift in mindset brought out by devices like the FuelBand has immediate application for the future of the healthcare industry.John Nosta recently pointed out the link between all these fitness-tracking devices and better health and wellness:

“The application to health and wellness is significant and important! Direct monitoring of these activities can provide essential information to guide your individual wellness, but also can be a tool to track activity and sleep as a measure of drug or device efficacy–by a physician or a pharmaceutical company. The clinical and lifestyle utility is endless. And as technology advances, the use of small and unobtrusive devices to record blood pressure and blood chemistries (like serum glucose), ECGs and EEGs, respiration and a host of other yet discovered uses will make devices like the UP a breakthrough in health and fittness that will help redefine how well we take care of ourselves!”

In the future, the Nike+ FuelBand could even become a tool for the primary care physician: “You will download (or drop off) your “digital health diary” to the doctor’s office and have the stored information be the basis for your “virtual physicial”. You don’t need be there — just leave the data.”

Critics, of course, are fair to point out that the Jawbone UP has had its share of problems after it hit the U.S. market. Moreover, there has now been enough hype and buzz about the gamification of everything that it’s fair to ask: How much of all these game mechanics in products like Nike+ FuelBand are just a case of “gamewashing”? After all, who really wants to compare a bunch of flashing neon lights on their wristband all day? Don’t we have enough “virtual currencies” in our lives already to be worrying about something called Fuel?

However, revolutions start with the ability to take complex concepts and make them palatable and attractive for the masses. Ideas such as the “Quantifiable Self” have been around for years. The ideas of “motivational hacks” and “gamification” have also been around for years. Most start-ups have focused on one or the other, but not both. What was needed was a champion to make these concepts real for people in the mainstream. Nike, as one of the most beloved consumer brands in the world, has the ability to turn the Nike+ FuelBand into part of a frontal attack on the modern healthcare establishment. Nike Fuel may just end up becoming a new mobile health platform that transforms “lifestyle tracking” into “lifestyle changing.”

Nike unveiled the Nike+ FuelBand Thursday, a new wristband that aims to track all physical activities and provide a common metric for tracking performance across sports.

I had an opportunity to test out the device for several hours, taking it from Nike’s press conference in New York City to a tennis training session and a lunch.

The device performed as promised – after syncing with an iPod touch after each stop, the Nike+ FuelBand app charted my progress and allowed me to share it on Twitter and Facebook (although those features won’t work in full until the device goes live next month).

Not surprisingly, it charted a huge spike in activity during the tennis session (I earned about 500 fuel points in 45 minutes), was fairly flat during a bus ride between locations, and picked up slightly while casually walking around.

The FuelBand itself features only one button, which lets you sync with the iPod touch or iPhone and cycle through the metrics that it tracks: Fuel score, calories burned, steps and the time. It comes in three sizes and fit to my wrist snug; it’s also waterproof, which means you can take a post-workout shower without removing it

While Nike might have beat competitors like the MotoACTV and Jawbone Up to the active bracelet market over two years ago, its original endeavor, the Nike+ SportBand, was getting long in the tooth. That changes today with the introduction of the far sleeker Nike+ FuelBand. It’s much in the vein of the original, except boasts a more attractive 20 LED dot-matrix display and can measure activity in a new unit the company calls NikeFuel. That latter bit is a normalized score that unlike calories “awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup.” We’ll have to see about that, but we’re definitively smitten with its design and that row of colorful LEDs that progressively fills as one gets closer to reaching their intended goal. The $149 pre-orders go live on the company’s online store at 5PM ET, but those interested ought to check out the press release below, and watch our video’s

PRESS RELEASE

NIKE Announces New NIKE+ FuelBand –Measuring Movement to Make Life A Sport

New York, New York (January 19, 2012) – NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) announced today the NIKE+ FuelBand, an innovative wristband that tracks and measures everyday movement to motivate and inspire people to be more active. Activities can now be measured through a new metric called NikeFuel: the more active you are, the more NikeFuel you earn.

NIKE, Inc. President & CEO Mark Parker unveiled NIKE+ FuelBand at an event in New York attended by seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, Oklahoma City scoring champion and all-star Kevin Durant and 2011 IAAF women’s 100-meter World Champion Carmelita Jeter.

“The NIKE+ FuelBand is a way for Nike to further evolve the exciting possibilities of merging the physical and digital worlds,” said Parker. “Nike has always been about inspiring athletes, and the NIKE+ FuelBand will help motivate them in a simple, fun and intuitive way.”

Designed to be worn throughout the day, the ergonomic, user-friendly NIKE+ FuelBand uses accelerometry to provide information about different activities through movement of the wrist via a LED dot matrix display. Four metrics are available: Time, Calories, Steps and NikeFuel. Unlike calorie counts, which vary based on someone’s gender and body type, NikeFuel is a normalized score that awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup.

Users set a daily goal of how active they want to be, and how much NikeFuel they want to achieve. The NIKE+ FuelBand displays a series of 20 LED lights that go from red-to-green as the user gets closer to their goal. The FuelBand syncs with the Nike+ website through a built-in USB, or wirelessly through Bluetooth to a free iPhone app, to record activity and track progress every day. The app interface also provides encouragement and motivation as goals are achieved.

Armstrong said, “What’s great about the idea of NikeFuel and the FuelBand is the way it provides real information and numbers to show how much people are doing all day, every day. That’s what will get people challenging themselves to do more and better their own scores. It’s a tool to get people more active.”

“NikeFuel means everyone can get recognition for activities they do,” said Durant. “It provides a scoreboard for your day and gets everyone moving.”
Jeter said, “You don’t have to be an elite athlete to appreciate how NikeFuel can motivate you. It’s an easy way to get credit for activities and compare how you do with others, even if you take part in different sports.

The Nike+ Fuelband will be available for preorder starting January 19th in the US at Nikestore.com for a suggested retail price of $149 (US).

To use Nike+ FuelBand, the following is needed:
• A Macintosh or PC with built-in USB. Mac OS v 10.4 or later, Windows 7 or Windows Vista (SP2) or
Windows XP (SP2)
• Internet access. Broadband is recommended.
• Optional mobile app available in the iTunes App store; for updates on compatible mobile devices, visit Nikeplus.com

Exercise gadgetry seems to be all the rage this season, with products like the Jawbone UP and MotoACTV entering the marketplace. Nike of all companies will certainly not be left behind, and has today announced a new wristband called the FuelBand. Not unlike its competitors, the FuelBand measures time, steps and calories during your fitness routine.

It’s incredibly similar to the Jawbone UP, as its a fitness tracking wrist band. The most poignant difference is that Nike’s FuelBand measures something called NikeFuel — a measurement of your wrist movement. Nike claims that “the more you move, the more NikeFuel you earn,” according to Business Insider.

The FuelBand can either sync to your PC through a USB connection or via Bluetooth to an iPhone app. From there you can keep all your stats in one place and set goals for yourself.

We haven’t seen the MotoACTV gain a whole lot of traction thus far, and we all remember what a failure the Jawbone UP was. Hopefully Nike’s offering will have more success than the competition.

Nike+ was a super sweet tool for runners to keep track of their workouts. But what about the rest of your life? What if Nike+ could keep track of that? That’s what the brand new Nike+ Fuelband, an evolution of Nike+ in a simple Livestrong-styled wristband, tries to do.

The idea of wearing something to track your fitness activity in everyday life isn’t exactly new. Fitbit’s done it with some success, Jawbone spectacularly failed at it and there are so many fitness watches you can wear one on every one of your appendages. But Nike+ Fuelband is a slightly different beast, its goal is to provide one simple measurement for every kind of activity. How does it work?

The Fuelband doesn’t just count steps. It doesn’t tick off miles. What’s unique about Nike+ Fuelband is that it uses “oxygen kinetics” to figure out the amount of oxygen you’re using and then translates that input/output into a “universal currency” named Nikefuel. Everyone, whether you’re a basketball player or a football player or a life player or a PC game player, is measured with Nikefuel. The more active things you do in a day means the more Nikefuel you earn in a day. Nike says that they’ve correlated oxygen intake with specific fitness activities and then created a way to translate it to Nikefuel. Basically, it’s a smart and Nike-branded algorithm that brings everyone onto the same unit of measurement.

The Fuelband looks like a bulked up Livestrong band that has a three-axis accelerometer to track movement, LED lights to display your progress against your goal (red is bad, green is good), show the time and even has a snazzy hidden USB port. It’s all controlled by one button so the Fuelband is dead simple to use. It connects to your iPhone wirelessly via Bluetooth and to the Nike+ webapp when you plug in the band. When I wore it, it was actually pretty comfortable—surprisingly cool and light on the wrist. Nike says the battery can last 4 days on a single charge and that it’ll talk nice to Facebook, Foursquare and Path. The Fuelband will cost $150 and start shipping on February 22nd.

It’s a clever idea! As balancing the differences of various activities (sprint, jog, etc) can provide the token to improve overall fitness since you’re gunning for the same goal, in this case, a Nikefuel benchmark. Nike believes that life is a sport, every human is an athlete and everything you do should be measured. I’m definitely interested in seeing how much Nikefuel I gain for surfing the internet.

I have to hand it to Nike for its unique take on the growing fad of fitness-tracking devices.

The FuelBand is Nike’s stab at this segment, which others including the Jawbone Up and Motorola Mobility’s MotoActv have already tread. But with production of the Up halted for a battery issue, and Motorola’s product still a little-known niche device, there’s a big opening in the market.

Unlike some of the other devices, the primary crux of the FuelBand is its Nike Fuel reading, a metric that Nike put together on its own that matches a person’s movement through the wristband’s accelerometer against data collected on how rapidly oxygen is consumed. As with other fitness monitors that rely on an accelerometer, the readings vary greatly depending on how much you move your arm. Cycling and certain kinds of weight lifting, for instance, wouldn’t register much as simply sitting on your couch and waving your hands.

But chances are, if you’re spending $149 on a FuelBand, you’re going to want to pay attention to the Nike Fuel readout.

Following a press conference that Nike held yesterday to unveil the device, the company took the media on a little field trip to test out the FuelBand in a variety of activities. The following are my early impressions after a day with the device.

My initial thought when I put on the device was how rigid it was. It’s also a little bulky–at least bulkier than the Jawbone Up, but less intrusive than a MotoActv held on by a wristband. There was actually little give on the device, and I was concerned that it would start to chaff or knock against my bone. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the device seemingly fades away when you’re in the middle of your activity, quietly working in the background.

After slapping it on and syncing it to the provided iPod Touch via Bluetooth, I was on my way. Coming right out of the box, my Nike Fuel score was a measly 37. That would change soon.

First up on the activity list, double-dutch jump rope.(Credit: Roger Cheng/CNET)

The Nike representatives were coy about the afternoon “experience segment” as the media piled into a small shuttle bus. The first stop: a “very Brooklyn” abandoned warehouse retrofitted into a gallery space, where members of the National Double Dutch League first demonstrated the art of skipping between two ropes, and then dragging journalists and Nike representatives into the action.

After a timid first step, I was skipping rope and getting in touch with my inner child. I also learned I wasn’t particularly good at either holding or skipping rope. After a few turns skipping and holding the rope, I checked my wristband, but barely made any progress with my FuelBand.

Reporters and Nike representatives alike got in on the fun.(Credit: Roger Cheng/CNET)

Next up: bucket drumming. Members of the band the Drumadics got us banging on old buckets with drumsticks, slowly forming a cohesive, if not all too great sounding, collective of drummers.

I learned a few things while drumming: it’s actually a pretty intense workout if you keep at it, and I have no rhythm at all. It’s the same reason I stink at the drums in Rock Band.

After the two activities, I clocked in at a reasonable 575, still a bit short of the 750 goal Nike had set for all of the FuelBands.

Turns out those activities were just the appetizers to the main course: a stop at the Masaryk Basketball Court in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Nike arranged to have everyone outfitted with basketball gear (all Nike branded, of course) and on the court. A number of basketball vets and professional players ran us through a beginner’s version of one of their camps, getting us moving through running, layup, and shooting drills.

I don’t consider myself a terrible basketball player, but not a particularly good one either. Having not played ball for a while, it also felt good to be on the court–particularly one that Nike has clearly put some money into renovating. One thing I certainly am is out of shape. The drills admittedly left me pretty winded, although the fear of embarrassing myself was a pretty strong motivator.

After the drills, I noticed my total jumped to above 1,800. Likewise, most of the reporters had scores that rocketed up after the intense session. For comparison’s sake, a total normal day’s activity should be around 2,500 points, with an active day at 4,000, and a high-energy day at 5,500. By syncing it to the iPod Touch through a complimentary FuelBand app, I was able to get my activity in graph form and set a new daily goals.

In total, the group of reporters scored nearly 22,000 Nike Fuel points.

At this point, you’re probably tired of me referring to Nike Fuel, which is where the dilemma for the FuelBand lies.

The decision to move to their own standard of measuring activity was a bold one, and comes with some decent advantages. Athletes from different sports can compare their activities on an apples to apples basis. It promotes activity of any kind, something the government and health organizations have been shouting as us to do more of. For the gamer in me, the app gives you a score that you psychologically want to keep beating (there are even achievements packed into the app when you clear different benchmarks–I got an ice-themed one for doubling my daily goal–as well as a little mascot named Fuelie that cheers you on). Nike was smart to use this system as a minor dangling carrot to keep users motivated.

But the Nike Fuel system is by nature too exclusive. If you don’t own a Nike product, you won’t know or care about Nike Fuel. The company is hoping to push Nike Fuel into the social media realm, allowing you to share scores online or check in via apps like FourSquare. Again, even if you were comfortable sharing a score, would you? It’s unclear since few people would really appreciate it. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t.

Yes, the FuelBand also displays steps and calories, but that’s almost an afterthought next to Nike Fuel. Nike seems pretty confident in this new metric, and a representative said all of its other Nike+ devices will eventually provide Fuel readouts as well.

When it launches next month, it’ll only work with iOS devices initially, with Android coming in a few months. While I’m certain they will be smoothed out, I found I had trouble synching my wristband to the provided iPod Touch a few times, requiring me to restart to band. The app launches in the iTunes store on February 22, the same day the FuelBand is available in the U.S.

Nike’s device also only really focuses on activity, whereas the Jawbone Up looked at a person’s holistic schedule, including features that help monitor sleep and eating patterns. The Up even vibrates gently to wake you up or to provider reminders. The Up, however, doesn’t have a display, and of course has its battery issues, and can’t sync to other devices through Bluetooth. Nike says the FuelBand should last four days on a full charge.

Like the Up, the FuelBand goes for simplicity, with only one button to switch between the time, Nike Fuel, calories, and step readout. Unfortunately, that means no stopwatch or ability to track your different laps. Nike says the FuelBand is designed to work with other Nike+ devices, although I’m not sure if athletes want to pack that much gear during their activities.

Motorola’s MotoActv comes with a music player and GPS capabilities, but is at least $100 pricier.

While it’s impossible to get a complete assessment of such a device in one afternoon, I have to admire the ambition and thought that was put into the FuelBand. It feels like a quality product, and could potentially be a worthy competitor to what’s out in the market right now–as long as you’re willing to buy into Nike’s Fuel concept.

You can find youth wrestling shoes in all brands. We for one, prefer the Asics Wrestling brand. Why, do we like that brand so much, simple… We have worn them.

Earlier sports used to be a man’s kingdom but women are getting on the field and proving themselves as great sportspersons. Though I find almost all types of sports interesting, wrestling catches my attention the most. I have a passion for martial arts and find wrestling really exciting. You will agree to the fact that the type of shoes that you wear play an important role when it comes to sports. For the wrestling, I will give full marks to Asics wrestling shoes. These shoes are not only great for wrestling but for all types of martial arts.

Sports can be tiring and if you do not wear the right shoes, there are high chances of you having foot disorders. While wrestling, you need to wear shoes that are comfortable, durable and that can absorb any kind of shock. The Asics wrestling shoes are specially created for the martial arts practitioners. They are exclusively designed and manufactured keeping the requirement of the athletics in mind.

If you pay close attention to the martial arts practitioners while watching sports on television, you will realize that most of the athletics prefer wearing Asics wrestling shoes. This is because these shoes are flexible and handy. Apart from that, they comfortably slip on your feet just like slippers. The comfort and lightweight of these shoes makes you feel like you are wearing nothing at all.

Another important feature that makes Asics wrestling shoes so special is their outstanding grip. When I used to take my martial arts classes, I came across this extraordinary footwear for the first time and since then I have stuck to it. They are much more comfortable and durable than any other common designer sneaker.

If you are a sportsperson or you have a passion for wearing sports shoes then you must check out the fabulous Asics wrestling shoes. They offer a wide range of selection to suit all kinds of martial arts. You will find them easily in any of the athletic footwear stores near you. You can also buy them online for a discounted price through the various online athletic shoe stores in the Internet.
